A Geometry course has many objectives:

*Learn the language of mathematics
*Learn parts of mathematics history
*Further develop logic, reasoning, justifying answers and writing proofs
*Learn about shapes and their properties

The language of mathematics is extremely precise. In order to avoid confusion, mathematicians use MathVocabulary with exact definitions. Mathematicians have a specific way of talking about their subject that incorporates their history and culture while minimizing misunderstanding. The culture of mathematics values logic and proofs. Simply because a formula or technique has consistently worked, does not guarantee that it will work the next time.

When I teach Geometry I emphasize: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines, Triangles, Proportions and Similarity, Right Triangle Trigonometry, Polygons, and Surface Areas and Volumes.
The most recent addition to the website. I will reflect on teaching on Algebra 1, Algebra Tiles, and continue to add GeoGebra applets.

The two applets I have uploaded so far both deal with slope.
The first applet explore slope by looking at the change in y and the change in x graphically: Algebra1/Slope.html.
The second applet allows students to practice Algebra1/SlopePractice.html by hiding the answer with a check box while rearranging points and the line.
All GeoGebra Applets will open in a new tab or window.

I primarily use GeoGebra in Geometry while using Texas Instruments graphing calculators for Algebra II. However, there are times it is helpful to watch a graph change when you change different coefficients. Rather than retyping a quadratic equation and looking at different values of "a," with GeoGebra a student can slide the value of "a" and watch the graph change.

Quadratic equations in standard form with a focus on the axis of symmetry, the vertex and roots:
Algebra2/Quadratics_Web.html
Quadratic equations in vertex form with a focus on how the graph changes with changes in "a", "h" and "k":
Algebra2/VertexForm_Web.html
Exponential equation in standard form, with the graph on its logarithmic inverse and the line //y// = //x//:
Algebra2/ExponentialLogSlidersInverse.html

This website is my primary presence on the internet. I launched it on March 9th, 2008 and hope to make it much more complete in the future. I am trying to better myself as a teacher in a number of ways, including word walls, smart boards, and graphing calculators. I am impressed with what can be done with dynamic geometry software. This website, currently, is my conduit for sharing applets I have created with GeoGebra, a free dynamic geometry application.

I am a fifth year teacher. The last two years I have been at http://www.bellevue-schools.com. Previously, I spent two years at http://www.bhas.org. I did a full year internship at http://www.hpsk12.net/ while attending http://www.msu.edu for my teaching certificate. Before attending MSU I attended http://www.alma.edu where I earned my bachelors of science in mathematics and computer science. After Alma I worked in both the actuarial field and computer programming before I realized that my true calling is teaching.
!!!ExploringComputers
We used the http://www.gimp.org to alter these three images, along with a few others. The first picture, students had to copy out my brother and put him into another picture. The second image, students were to play with different filters and effects (particularly lighting). In the last image, they were to remove the railing.

~GeoGebra is a free dynamic geometry software application that combines Algebra and Geometry. It can be found at http://www.geogebra.org. It allows the user to enter functions, plot points, create circles, etc. These can allow students to explore different mathematical ideas kinetically or can allow a teacher to present information visually.

One of the easiest ways of learning ~GeoGebra is by watching the videos at http://math247.pbwiki.com/Learn+and+Use+GeoGebra.

The applets I have created can be found under their respective course titles MathPanel. Many other ~GeoGebra applets can be found through your favorite search engine.
Geometry is frequently thought to be a course about shapes. I have additional goals when teaching Geometry. Here are some of my thoughts AboutGeometry.

In addition to using dynamic geometry in order to help my students gain deep understanding of mathematics, I worry about my students learning the MathVocabulary of Geometry which is necessary to have success in the class. MathVocabulary is a focus in this class.

I really like and value the ability to change drawings while students watch. Instead of giving a static example of vertical angles, I can change the lines and we can observe how the angles change but remain congruent. I am primarily using GeoGebra currently as a demonstration tool; however, I would like to incorporate more inquiry questions and utilize a computer lab so students get hands on experience.

Here are applets more or less ready for the web:

Geometry/Parallel_Lines.html
Geometry/TriangleAngleSumThm.html

To get started with this blank TiddlyWiki, you'll need to modify the following tiddlers:
* SiteTitle & SiteSubtitle: The title and subtitle of the site, as shown above (after saving, they will also appear in the browser title bar)
* MainMenu: The menu (usually on the left)
* DefaultTiddlers: Contains the names of the tiddlers that you want to appear when the TiddlyWiki is opened
You'll also need to enter your username for signing your edits: <<option txtUserName>>

I have tried two different approaches with Geometry vocabulary, and intend to extend these ideas to the other math courses I teach.

The first approach is called the KIM method. I learned about KIM from my Dean at Benton Harbor. The basic idea is to break every word down into three parts: The Key Idea, Information, Memory Clue. The Key Idea is the vocabulary word. The Information is the definition. The Memory Clue is a drawing that helps students remember the word. The idea is well shown at http://www.asdk12.org/MiddleLink/HighFive/KIM/.

The second approach I use is a word wall. I incorporate the word wall with the KIM method. The word goes on the board, we define the word and draw the picture. After class I then tape the word to the wall. http://www.justreadnow.com/strategies/wordwall.htm gives a definition and techniques.

VocabWordWall_WebSize.pdf with both a part of my word wall along with a student's KIM sheet, which I collect every test day along with their notes. Here is a blank VocabularyGrid.pdf.

The word computer was used before the digital revolution. A computer referred to a person, a trade, or a career. People looked up logarithms, found sines and cosines, and determined square roots. They carefully and methodically followed algorithms similar to the process of a modern digital computer. This is not what I look for from students. Mindlessly following an algorithm is not mathematics. I expect students to be able to calculate accurately and quickly, but am more concerned about how they make sense of mathematics, how they view mathematics and how they solve problems.

A calculator can determine the interest on a loan but a student of mathematics can make sense of exponential growth. After graduating, my students may never calculate a payment using the interest formula; however, I want them to understand that credit card debt grows exponentially. I do not know what jobs or hobbies my students will have throughout their life. However, I do recognize that not knowing mathematics can limit a person’s future. Most importantly, I want students to be able to approach a problem logically with the expectation of solving their problem, whether the problem involves numbers or not.
There are many ways of creating web pages and websites. Raw html, applications such as ~FrontPage and Dreamweaver can all work. I started to look at wikis as a way to collaborate with my fellow math teachers at Benton Harbor. While I am still researching collaborative wikis, I did find ~TiddlyWiki which can be used as a personal notebook, blog, or a way to create a person website. ~TiddlyWiki can be found at http://www.tiddlywiki.com.
All GeoGebra Applets will open in a new tab or window.

I have a couple of applets to be used with right angle trigonometry. The first shows sines / cosines / tangents with two similar triangles:
Trigonometry/SimilarTrianglesRightAngleTrig.html
The other right angle worksheet was written to use in class to quickly and dynamically create examples:
Trigonometry/TriangleForRightAngleTrigInClass.html
I have created a few kinetic views of the unit circle. Eventually I will be adding more inquiry questions, either on the page or as a worksheet.

A tool to demonstrate, conceptually, what the sine //is// on the unit circle:
Trigonometry/SineUnitCircle.html
A similar tool but gives the sine and the cosine on the unit circle using degrees:
Trigonometry/UnitCircleDegrees.html

A way to illustrate how sine and cosine waves can be created using the unit circle:
Trigonometry/SineCosineUnitCircle_degree_web.html
Trigonometry/SineCosineUnitCircle.html
